The Change Pro simulation

The realities of change.
Made tangible.

Change Pro places participants inside a demanding change challenge. To succeed, they must understand people, build support and make the right decisions while time runs out.

120 simulated daysA clear mission with limited time.
24 senior managersDifferent priorities, networks and attitudes.
25 tacticsChoices that involve real trade-offs.
The scenario

Can you mobilize people when you cannot simply tell them what to do?

Participants work in small teams of internal consultants, sent by Group Head Office into a successful division. Their mission: get the division's top management to adopt a major corporate initiative, such as a Six Sigma program, within 120 working days.

The 24 managers include the CEO, his executive assistant, four vice-presidents and their directors. They have their own priorities, relationships and views on the initiative, and the teams have almost no authority over them. Success depends on reading the organization, choosing the right tactics at the right time, and learning from the responses.

How it works

Decide. Observe. Adapt.

Every tactic costs simulated time and changes how managers see the initiative. Each manager moves through awareness, interest and evaluation before adopting it.

01 /

Gather information

Learn about individual managers, the committees they sit on and the informal networks that connect them.

02 /

Influence people

Hold meetings, seek advice, send one manager to convince another, set up a pilot project or a benchmarking visit.

03 /

Reach the organization

Use memos, workshops, external speakers, newsletters, an intranet site and more, at the right moment.

What participants learn

From understanding change to implementing it.

The simulation is the starting point of a facilitated discussion. Typical take-aways include:

  • People go through stages (awareness, interest, evaluation) before they adopt a change
  • Stakeholder analysis and building a guiding coalition of innovators and opinion leaders
  • Understanding and using informal networks: who can influence whom?
  • Combining individual, small-group and organization-wide tactics
  • Doing the right things at the right time, and keeping momentum
  • Creating dissatisfaction with the status quo early on
  • Communicating: what, when and through which media
  • The dilemmas of choosing pilot sites
A typical session

Half a day to a full day, with room for reflection.

Change Pro runs as a facilitated module of four to eight hours, with participants in teams of three to six.

Introduction

45 to 60 minutes in plenary: the mission, the organization and how to play.

Play

Around two to two and a half hours of team work on the simulation, with every team making its own choices.

Debrief

Teams compare strategies and results, then a plenary discussion draws out the lessons for real change.
